Here’s a simple guide to getting started safely.
Installing Linux might sound technical — but it’s more straightforward than you think.
You don’t need to be an expert — you just need to follow a few clear steps.
This guide walks you through the process using beginner-friendly options like Linux Mint, ZorinOS or Ubuntu.
Before You Start (Important)
✔ Back Up Your Files
- Save important documents, photos, etc.
👉 Installing Linux can erase data if done incorrectly
✔ What You’ll Need
- A USB stick (8GB or larger)
- A computer to prepare the USB
- Internet connection
Step 1: Download Linux
Go to the official website of the Linux version you want to install and download an ISO file (the installer).
Examples:
- Linux Mint
- Ubuntu
- ZorinOS
👉 This file contains the full operating system
Step 2: Create a Bootable USB
You’ll need a tool to put Linux onto your USB stick.
Popular options:
- Rufus (Windows)
- balenaEtcher (Windows/Mac/Linux)
Basic process:
- Insert USB stick
- Open the tool
- Select the ISO file
- Start the process
👉 This will erase everything on the USB
Step 3: Boot from the USB
- Insert the USB into the computer you want to install Linux on
- Restart the computer
- Press the boot menu key (often F12, ESC, or DEL)
- Select the USB device
👉 This loads Linux instead of your normal system
Step 4: Try Linux (Optional but Recommended)
Most distros let you:
“Try before installing”
👉 This lets you:
- Test Wi-Fi
- Check performance
- Explore the system
Step 5: Start the Installation
Click Install Linux on the desktop.
You’ll be guided through:
- Language selection
- Keyboard layout
- Wi-Fi connection
👉 Follow the on-screen steps
Step 6: Choose Installation Type
You’ll usually see options like:
✔ Install alongside existing OS (Dual Boot)
- Keep your current system
- Choose at startup
✔ Erase disk and install Linux
- Full clean install
⚠️ This deletes everything on the drive
Step 7: Set Up Your User Account
You’ll choose:
- Your name
- Computer name
- Username
- Password
👉 This is how you log in
Step 8: Let It Install
- Installation takes around 10–30 minutes
- Your system copies files and sets everything up
Step 9: Restart Your Computer
When prompted:
- Remove the USB stick
- Restart
👉 Linux will now load from your hard drive
What Happens Next?
You’ll be greeted with your new Linux desktop.
From here, you can:
- Install apps
- Browse the web
- Customise your system
