Understanding Internet Congestion

As the internet grew rapidly during the 1980s and 1990s, networks began facing a major problem: congestion. Too much traffic could slow down or even disrupt communication.

Floyd focused on solving this challenge by developing smarter ways for networks to manage data traffic.

Advancing TCP/IP Networking

Her research built upon the Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol created by pioneers like Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn.

She helped improve how internet traffic is handled, particularly through:

Random Early Detection (RED)

One of Floyd’s best-known contributions was helping develop Random Early Detection (RED), a system designed to prevent network congestion before it becomes severe.
