Computer viruses are something most people have heard of — often when something has already gone wrong. But they didn’t start as the serious threat they are today.

What began as experiments and digital pranks has evolved into a global cybersecurity problem affecting homes and businesses alike.

Here’s how it happened.

🧪 The First Experiments

The concept of a “computer virus” dates back to the early days of computing.

In the 1970s, a program called Creeper is often considered the first example. It wasn’t malicious in the modern sense — it simply moved between systems and displayed a message.

Shortly after, another program called Reaper was created to remove it — effectively becoming the first antivirus tool.

At this stage, viruses were more about curiosity than harm.

💾 The First Real Viruses (1980s)

The 1980s saw the arrival of the first true viruses that could spread between computers.

One of the earliest examples was Brain (1986), created by two brothers as a way to track software piracy. It spread via infected floppy disks.

These early viruses:

As computers became connected, viruses evolved rapidly.

Notable outbreaks included viruses that spread through email attachments, tricking users into opening infected files.

This is when viruses started becoming a real problem for everyday users.

The early 2000s saw large-scale global infections.

Viruses like ILOVEYOU and Mydoom spread rapidly across the internet, infecting millions of computers within days.

These attacks caused:

  • System crashes
  • Data loss
  • Massive disruption to businesses

Importantly, they relied heavily on human behaviour — curiosity, trust, or lack of awareness.

🔐 From Viruses to Cybercrime

Over time, things became more serious.

Modern threats moved beyond simple viruses into more complex forms of malware:

  • Ransomware (locking files and demanding payment)
  • Spyware (stealing personal data)
  • Trojans (disguised as legitimate software)

Cybercrime became highly organised, with attackers targeting individuals, businesses, and even governments.

The goal shifted from disruption to financial gain.

🛡️ Modern Protection

As threats evolved, so did security.

Today’s protection includes:

  • Antivirus and anti-malware software
  • Firewalls
  • Email filtering
  • Regular updates and patches

Operating systems now include built-in security features, but no system is completely immune — especially if users are caught off guard.

⚠️ Why It Still Matters

Despite better technology, computer viruses (and malware in general) are still a major issue.

Most infections today happen because:

  • A link is clicked
  • An attachment is opened
  • Software isn’t updated
  • Security is ignored

In other words, the biggest vulnerability is often human, not technical.
